2021 Yamaha MT-07 for Beginners

It’s impossible to mention Yamaha when it comes to middleweight motorcycles almost not . The Yamaha MT-series ( FZ-series ) nakeds have previously accommodated aggressive styling and brilliant performance whilst being accessible . One among them is the rather tasteful Yamaha MT-07. A Successor to the brutal yet athletic FZ6 incredibly . The brutal yet athletic FZ6 the Yamaha MT-07 incredibly came with many upgrades and refinements done to an already impressive offering . The MT-07 was badged under the FZ nameplate. Yamaha decided to bring the MT moniker and standardize their lineup of nakeds.

Along with a change of title, the MT-07 came with a host of upgrades: Improved suspension, reworked bodywork. And updated looks were part of the package. With an alluring price tag of $7,500. Yamaha sold a bucket load of MT-07s. Though it was far even more forceful than its predecessor . The MT-07 was significantly lighter and agile. The MT-07 is a mix of relaxed commuting with a bit of hooliganism rather than the all-out tracker.

That gap could be filled by the new YZF-R7 .

Yamaha MT-07: Engine And Chassis

The Yamaha MT-07 comes with a 689-cc parallel-twin. Power stands at 72.4 horsepower and the MT-07 makes 49.4 lb-ft of torque from the comparatively low-revving crossplane-crank motor. Complying with the Euro 5 emission norms. The 2021 MT-07 is not expected to lose any of its abilities but could gain a few essentials. A bigger set of front brakes and few styling upgrades to be specific. In terms of electronics though. The MT-07 is lacking. That was expected from a motorcycle because falls in this price bracket. Something like the Royal Enfield Interceptor.

Yamaha MT-07: Styling

The philosophy has been evolved to suit the changing trends while keeping the underlying theme the same. The tank shrouds and under-cowls are minimalized along with the impossibly appealing machined swingarm.

Yamaha MT-07: Is It Intimidating

The chassis of the MT-07 is well-appointed with easy ingress and a comfy riding position. The re-styled seats and revised ergonomics make for the MT-07 being a tad bit more comfy than its senior sibling. The seat height stands at 31.7 inches; a bit on the taller side with shorter riders.Between stops. Compared to other naked middleweights. The curb weight is a touch on the higher side at around 403 pounds. While it is not the most ideal for a beginner to handle. It’s the worst given there certainly not are bikes that are much heavier and less playful than the Yamaha MT-07 .

Yamaha MT-07: It’s a Great City Bike

With good riding ergonomics and a tractable engine very . The Yamaha MT-07 is definitely one of the easiest to ride around town. The engine is mated to a slick 6-speed gearbox with a multi-plate clutch despite the fact a slipper clutch would’ve been a welcome addition. The engine snaps to life with a snarly growl that’s akin to the MT-09’s. A move is gotten by the powerplant on post 3000 rpm . With a firm mid-range very . The limiter can be hit by the bike at 10 . 000 rpm whilst maintaining the equivalent levels of grunt . The gearbox is one of the most refined but shuffling through them can sometimes be abrupt. Pootling around town. The MT-07 is very flexible when it comes to maneuvering and weaving through traffic. Despite the fact the engine heating is a caveat, bear in mind. It’s one of the cheapest middleweights available.

2021 Yamaha MT-07 First Ride

The most impressive thing about Yamaha’s MT-07. The most impressive thing now updated for 2021 . 2021 is who’s been buying the prior versions. It’s been purchased by almost as many members of Generation Z as by boomers. And while 27 percent of the owners have just bought their first motorcycle when they collected their MT-07. More ( 36 percent ) of them have been even riding for more than 20 years .

What is it about this machine that gives it such broad appeal? And has Yamaha sustained it with the new version? The appeal starts with the concept. According to Aaron Bast, senior product planner at Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA . The MT-07 has always been concentrated on delivering three things: easy sports excitement (defined by torque and agility), easygoing character, and smart value. The purchase price was perhaps the thing because most defined the first 07: It was introduced seven years ago at what was then a mind-blowing suggested retail of $6.990. The 2021 version, with its LED headlight, standard ABS braking, and other upgrades even . And other upgrades has only gone up from that number by 10 percent, to $7,699.

2021 Yamaha MT-07 Engine Details

As engineers such to indicate, harder to build a good inexpensive bike than a high-priced, efficient superbike it’s genuinely . Yamaha was concentrated on keeping the MT-07′s design simple. Value was added by doing only what and nothing else . The 07 engine : is taken It’s a 689cc twin-cylinder in the equivalent family as the three-cylinder MT-09 engine ; the two share a four-valve combustion chamber, a valvetrain design, and their general layout . But the MT-07 goes for a proportionally longer stroke. Midrange is emphasized by with valve timing because even over high-rpm power . This engine is the product of a company that never stopped doing on the parallel twin. A company that reinvigorated the configuration with a 270-degree crankshaft that gave it the firing order and much of the feel of a 90-degree V-twin.

Yamaha has been allowed by it’s an engine whose mild tuning to continue to use, even in 2021, standard rider-controlled throttle bodies rather than more expensive throttle-by-wire .

How Does the 2021 Yamaha MT-07 Ride?

With short gearing and a torque curve that comparatively stays above 40 pound-feet from 3, 500 to 8, 800 rpm, the MT-07 rockets away from traffic lights . The twin-cylinder feels relaxed on the freeway. The twin-cylinder only starting to get a small buzzy whether the speed is pushed above 80 mph in sixth gear. Lighter is felt by it’s a 407-pound bike because . Some of that is because the 2021 got a handlebar that’s 1.3 inches wider and is positioned about half an inch higher and closer to the rider. For a more upright slightly riding position and more steering leverage . It’s quick and responsive and agile. A motorcycle that will make any rider feel as whether his skills have improved just by hopping on. The front brakes are also noticeably more powerful. As the front discs have grown to 298mm (up 16mm from prior years). There are still limits to what $7.700 will buy you. Any hasn’t been gained by and the MT of the sophisticated traction control, lift control, or cornering ABS of its 900cc stablemate . Neither has it received the inertial measurement unit (IMU) that would enable those systems to function. But the discs are now round rather than wave-rotor shaped. And the standard ABS system prevents wheels from locking and kept the rear wheel on the ground during the few stops that were hard enough to engage the front ABS. Though is cosmetically similar to the MT-09′s projector unit. And is one of the more controversial styling features of the 2021 MTs. With its low beam controlled by two projector lenses and the high-beam shaped through an internal reflector and the large front lens. The whole front is allowed by the stocky headlight of the bike to be pulled closer to the fork . A stocky look because Yamaha stylists very much wanted. Everyone is not prepared for the stark modernity of the small headlight . But no one will complain because the headlight is brighter or has a better beam pattern.

As no one will just dislike the more stocky LED turn signals the new 07 has received . Running lights were led by or the two because bracket the headlight .

2021 Yamaha MT-07 Chassis Details

Unchanged is remained by much of the chassis . The tubular steel chassis is dimensionally similar. And the Kayaba back shock and 41mm Kayaba standard front fork return; the shock is still stroked directly by the swingarm. This is certainly one of the things that helps Yamaha meet its value target. When riding is said by and very occasionally, over sharp-edged bumps . The MT’s suspension just works. Choices are offered by only the shock . With preload and rebound damping adjustments available.

Yamaha’s new YZF-R7 sportbike, built around this equivalent basic engine, gets a dual-acting slipper clutch, for example . But on initially riding the new MT. Sure when downshifting under hard braking in an attempt to get the rear wheel to hop or even disobey . To find it stayed only resolutely in line . The answer: It doesn’t have a slipper. One is needed by and it .

Many motorcyclists have found. And then stripping almost everything else away. It’s a brilliant job of engineering editing. The Tuning Fork engineers have changed enough to make the MT seem new while keeping everything that has made a broad array of motorcyclists happy before.

It continues to be the flagship of the MT range, which goes from the learner-legal MT-125, all the way to the superbike-derived, aggressive MT-10 SP. The upgrade to Euro5 has been used by Yamaha to tweak small weak points, such as the tyres. Such didn’t perform at their best. The handlebars are improved by and . The handlebars were a bit tight.

The bike now gets Michelin Road 5 tyres and the bars have been altered to be 30mm wider.

Yamaha MT-07 vs Triumph Trident 660

Headlines are grabbed by where sportsbikes on track . It is the middleweight class because sees large sales and of late there has only been one winner –. Launched in 2014. The parallel twin has dominated. Making 20 % of all Yamaha’s motorcycle sales up . In its third generation now .

The 2021 MT-07 has matured into a more refined bike with a greater emphasis on comfort. But a fly in the ointment : Triumph’s new Trident 660 there’s . Can it knock the class-leader off its perch around the UK’s toughest test route. But from the new nose and distinct dash it is aside very hard to tell in that case there have been any other upgrades . But again then did it need much doing ? Swapping from the MT to the Trident.

Grown-up is felt by the Triumph and latest . The styling is classical rather than outlandish. The dash is contemporary. There are electronic assists to explore (via hideously cheap-looking switchgear). Where the MT is subtle. The Trident is far more brash. The triple carries quite low gearing and responds instantly to any input from the throttle while also roaring out its intentions through its raucous exhaust note.

On the go this spirit translates into a bike that. While as not relaxed as the MT . The MT is brilliant fun. The MT is leaved by in terms of handling, the Trident for dead and though firmer on its suspension and less forgiving over bumps . It is just so much more fun in the corners. The better the Trident gets. Yet it doesn’t feel as it has overstepped the mark and aside from a clunky gearbox (it gets better once the revs rise) the Trident is just as happy as the MT cruising around town. The MT is still brilliant but the Trident has moved the game on. A proven base ( the superb Street Triple ) have been taken by triumph . And pared it back without removing any of the elements that make it so good –. Its sporty chassis and lovely triple motor namely .

The result is an amazingly well-priced middleweight that looks great. Doing the bare minimum and assuming the sales success would continue. From the engine internals and subtle ergonomic tweaks away . One of the key changes for 2021 is the way the MT-07 looks. Up front, there’s LED headlights and an MT-09-inspired new face.

2021 Yamaha MT-07 first ride review

For seven years nearly now . The MT-07 has been touted as the middleweight naked class leader. It is a bit shocking to consider because the MT-07 was the last model in the MT line-up to finally receive its styling update. Though the new aesthetic has not been welcomed among some core enthusiasts. The LED headlight assembly shoulders of the criticism much . Harnessing the design language of the most sinister robots in recent pop culture. The MT-07 does give off some brooding vibes. The MT-07 still sets the bar for edginess and curb appeal because most shoppers are trying to find in this category. Settling into the cockpit. The dash has been updated to a negative LCD instrument that has a black background and white readouts that are big. Bold and effective when quickly glancing very down during the ride . The tapered handlebar is now wider and situated higher (32 mm wider and 19 mm higher. To be exact). In terms of general riding ergonomics. More slightly bend and some stretch across the massive gas tank to the wide handlebar creates just a touch of crouching in the upright position . But other than because the MT-07 was a comfy ride. It is arguable because the MT-07 has the most motor character of any bike in the naked middleweight segment. The CP2 cross-plane configuration delivers on the torquey promise of the MT nomenclature. The CP2 motor's strength truly lies in the midrange. The MT genuinely pulls and “accidental” wheelies may occur (or deliberate ones. The vibrations and sound of the CP2 motor are lively and keep the ride fun.

While the 689 cc motor can happily gobble up the freeway miles. The lack of any wind protection or aerodynamics makes it feel more as a chore than a pleasure. As has been long documented over the years. Its greatest is performed by the MT-07 for city street hooliganism . What happens when the MT-07 heads out of town for some serious canyon carving? No changes has been claimed by seeing as how Yamaha to the KYB front fork and back shock for the 2021 model . It should not be a huge surprise because the suspension continues to underwhelm. The MT would rebound hard. The suspension was easily upset by any minor divot on the road.

Each bump resulting in a bounce that was very disruptive to holding the line. , on corner exit then finally . Rolling on the throttle would produce yet again another wallowing rebound. With no manner of damping at all and the power of the MT-07 motor would flex through the thin fork legs. The thin fork legs adding another dimension of woe to the troublesome suspension setup. It’s possible because the new enlarged 298 mm front brakes and aggressive entirely . Wider handlebar may exacerbate this problem. As more precise inputs with the equivalent old suspension can amplify the underlying damping issue. In the long fast sweepers. The MT-07 suspension displayed a bit more competency but was not specially impressive. The long and short of it is that suspension setup has been reported as an issue on this bike for various iterations and in 2021 it still has not been properly remedied. The MT-07 still looks and behaves as the street fighter because it was always meant to be. It remains true to its stripped-down heritage and is not encumbered by traction control, riding maps, and other electronic widgets. It is raw. Unpolished and uncouth and those are some of the reasons why it has such a fan base in the first place. To be honest the suspension is brutally inexcusably bad - a fatal flaw even . While the MT-07 has counted on its distinct motor character in the category to keep it ahead of the pack. The game is entered by the Triumph Trident with the excitement of a triple configuration and a more sophisticated approach to fit, finish, and performance . To answer the initial question posed. Answer the initial question has Yamaha rested on the MT laurels for too long? The answer is a definitive yes.
